Blue Hour refers to the period between Nautical Twilight and Golden Hour, or the period of time after sunset and before Nautical Twilight. Like sunrise and sunset it is fleeting, on 15-20 minutes. I was rummaging through my gear bag the other day and found my long lost #96 13 stop Kodak Wratten Neutral Density filter. I immediately set out to Marshall’s Point for some daytime long exposure spherescapery. I love being able to shoot minutes long exposures at 10 in the morning! As many of you know, I used to sell my work in the middle of Central Park in New York City. There was a busker who set up near me with his Handpan. For those of you who don’t know what a Handpan is, it is a metal drum (looks a bit like a UFO) and it has a wonderful sound. The music he played would often inspire ideas for images I made of park, one in particular was the Spherescape I made of the arcade in Bethesda Terrace. A few months ago I began collaborating with a musician friend of mine @lourdq Initially I had envisioned an installation of my art with his music. My friend then posited the question of “what if the images made music?” This led to the idea of creating a giant Spherescape that could be played by multiple people at the same time. After many iterations an experiments with all sorts of electronics we came across the folks at @sparkfun who cake up with a wonderful Arduino sketch using the teensy 3.2 and audio shield to create a Digital Handpan!!! I just about fell off my chair when I saw the video. Without further a-due allow me to introduce the very beat up prototype of what will become a 40x40” digital Handpan using my Bethesda Terrace image etched on copper clad pcb as the touch interface. #playableart #digitalhandpan #handpanmusic #arduinoproject #teensy #diysynth #bethesdaterrace #makemusic #spheresynth #centralparknyc
